Terminals are not computers as such, they are simple machines which receive data from a computer and send data. They would typically receive text data and display it on the monitor, while keys pressed on the keyboard would send data back to the computer. The first terminals were very basic text-only machines. Later terminals allowed for more complex commands including use of a mouse. A terminal does not echo its own data input, all displayed data originates from the computer it is communicating with.
