The Digital Electronics Corporation (DEC) VT05 was the first free-standing terminal from DEC, built in 1970. It is considered a smart terminal, with the crude ability to control the cursor through use of control characters.

The VT05 was only capable of displaying upper case ASCII text, on 20 rows by 72 columns. Although very basic, this terminal formed the basis of all terminals built there after.
